When Charles and I went up to Brisbane in the winters, Joy and I turned our talk to letters. Reading her letters now, forty years later, I am filled with joie de vivre. They really are written-down talk, sketch-book fresh with moments seen and felt, and spinnings-off into the surreal, spared of punctuation, full of her mid-century turn of phrase. She burned all my letters and almost everything she valued in one of her rages against going ‘gentle into that good night’.

We both enjoyed the company of children and I used to write to little Peregrine as well.

Peregrine loved his letter all to himself and unlike other [people’s] letters he gets they interest him and he can think about them. he says he is going to write to you. Sometimes he gets a letter from an aunt or what, and he loves getting the letter, but then some odd sort of mood sets in on him, bewilderment of some sort takes over. He really can’t think why he got the letter and a silence takes over—but your letter stimulates him to a great lot of chatter and excitement.

Again,

its rather funny your letter to peregrine telling him to talk to the letter box and tell it, ‘it wont be long till you come back’ is rather a joke because peregrine is staying with rose for at least a month, and can see him (as always) taking it very seriously and carrying out your instructions to the letter—and much to the bewilderment of the neighbors, they will most probably witness the extaodinary daily event, of a little boy talking into the mouth of a letter box, as the abos inniciate their young by breathing the myth from mouth into mouth …

I sent Peregrine a present.

Barbara, you’re little jumper to peregrine is lovely I wish I could wear it myself I think its lovely the only thing, it won’t fit him but Fern will love it if you won’t be offended—but it won’t fit her yet but I think it will next winter. Isn’t it lovely! We had a good laugh because its the sort of thing I do if I knit a jumper—but it is lovely and it will fit Fern next winter thats providing Fern grows! She seems to have stopped and everyone says ‘shes tiny, isn’t she? dainty really’ and you can see that look in their eyes, and I’m afraid I do wonder sometimes myself—I mean after all midgets do happen—still we’ll have an eternal doll if that’s the case—Fern has her first doll and is very funny, and the doll has no name (because another suspicious thing Fern doesn’t do is talk)…

I have known Joy to get set up to paint and then, because Peregrine asked her to make a picture of a horse, drop tools to go and look at horses. So we went for a long walk over the hill and came upon the skull of a dead horse. We sat down and had a wonderful
